Description
Released in 1989, Kadi Yombo stands as the most successful album that masterfully fuses traditional Tsogho Bwiti harp music with modern elements. Papé Nziengui skillfully combines rattles with synthesizers, creating a contrapuntal dialogue typical of harp - playing: male songs in appeal answered by female choirs, male voices shaping the musical arc against female worship rhythms. It's a blend of Tsogho ritual music and modern studio orchestration. The album features 10 musical pieces that are perfect for listening, dancing, and meditation. Since its release, Nziengui has become a global icon of Gabonese music, touring from Lagos to Paris and beyond. Some purists criticized him for mixing traditional harp music with modern instruments, but Nziengui remained steadfast. He pays homage to elders and promotes young talents, like his nephew Jean Pierre Mingongué. Nziengui is a man of rupture and openness, a cultural transmitter. He's the main harpist in Libreville, accompanying both national and foreign artists. In 1988, he was the first to release a cassette - album, and he created the group Bovenga, 'democratizing' the harp. Unlike many in modern music, he produces music that respects the sacredness and transcendence of the original music.
