Description

The gig was set for Sunday afternoon, July 3. The day before, Ray Charles and the singing group Lambert, Hendricks and Ross faced unruly crowds. Around 300 drunk revelers caused a stir during Charles' performance, and the police used tear - gas and water hoses. The riots got so out of control that the National Guard was called at midnight. When Waters and his band arrived on the scheduled day, they planned to leave the next day. Driver James Cotton saw John Lee Hooker at a corner with his guitar on his back, no case. Cotton offered him a ride to keep the musicians safe. Meanwhile, the city council wanted to cancel the concert, but promoter George Wein convinced them, as the USIA planned to film the festival to spread American culture abroad.
