In the late 1950s, orchestra leader/composer/arranger Bob Thompson was the American counterpart of Mexican - born Space Age Pop icon Esquivel. They shared the same label (RCA Victor), musicians, and studios in LA. Thompson's RCA albums like Mmm, Nice!, Just for Kicks, and On the Rocks are quintessential 1950s orchestral pop, full of charm and sophistication. He won Clio awards and had a Grammy - nominated track in 1959. In 1960, Thompson took a break from RCA to record The Sound of Speed. This 'concept' LP celebrates human transport technology, from scooters to rocket ships. Each of the twelve vehicular pieces is framed by real sound effects in vivid stereo. Thompson composed and arranged the music, and it was recorded in Italy by the Orchestra dei Concerti de Roma under Paul Baron. The Sound of Speed, an overlooked gem from an era of orchestral elegance, has been masterfully remastered by Bob Irwin in wide - angle stereo in the year Thompson turns 85.
