Grimes began making music when she learned the Logic program for her neuroscience class. Soon after, her MySpace page went viral, enabling her to book shows and focus on music full - time. She endured harsh living conditions in a Montreal crack den with no heat, suffering frostbite twice and witnessing a neighbor's tragic death in the hallway. She played at raves until her 2012 breakthrough album, Visions, which was recorded during a two - week speed binge while she stayed in her bedroom.
